Its the same as club soccer, club baseball, AAU basketball, etc. Typically regional teams with tryouts, pulling the best kids from multiple different high school/rec areas, often coached by HS coaches, or college players, or other experienced players and coaches. The atmosphere tends to be a little more intense with less emphasis on fun and more on winning.
Games are all through tournaments, both in state and out of state. Costs are HIGH - in the $1000s for a season, NOT including costs to travel to tournaments. There had previously been no options in Southern Utah county, so you are also looking at 45 min+ drive to practice, each direction, and there arent many kids from our area playing on these teams, at least at the youth level. Lacrosse is new to most of us in the area, and the commitment for a club team is high, both financially, as well as time and dedication.
As players and programs become more serious, club play becomes almost a requirement to compete at the top level. The best rec and high school teams will have many players on various clubs, and for those hoping to play beyond HS, it is a primary component in getting exposure to college coaches and scouts.
Club teams are extremely valuable for player development, but, as stated above, are typically very expensive and require a lot of commitment and travel, over the summer months and over the holidays. We want to provide an option that is the best of both worlds, with the following focus:
NOT BE SO CONSUMING: we want our kids to play other sports, not burn out, and stay passionate about lacrosse! We also dont want sports to be the only aspect to our players' lives and take up your entire Holiday season or summer. As such, we wait until Football season ends in the fall, and wrap up in early December to allow for winter sports and to not consume your Holiday season! In the summer, our season will be notably shorter than other clubs - this is intentional, to take up less of your time and money!
BE MORE ACCESSIBLE: less financial cost, less travel, closer practices, shorter seasons, and teams full of local players
MORE PLAYING TIME: we carefully review and limit our roster size to make sure everyone on our teams gets plenty of playing time at each tournament game
POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT: focus on fun, learning, growth, and team, while playing with friends and teammates in southern Utah County
DEVELOP INDIVIDUALLY AND AS A TEAM: more practice and game reps against high level competition, playing with local teammates and learning schemes and systems that will help prepare for High School lacrosse. Team and individual coaching from Payson High coaches as well as other high level instruction.
FOCUS ON REC/HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS: other club lacrosse teams sometimes view their club as the primary lacrosse team, and rec/HS teams as a necessary nuisance. That is the exact opposite of our approach! Our focus is not on winning trophies at tournaments, but seeing our work and growth pay off exponentially throughout the year, and even more so as the boys continue to play together and move on to high school. That is where our passion and pride are, rather than on a 'pay to play' club team.
